Faculty may sign up to have their class observed by the Director of Faculty Development (DoFD). During the observation, the DoFD takes ethnographic notes of the class, including student behavior, pedagogical moves, language spoken and written, classroom set-up, interactions, timing, etc.
After the observation, the faculty member may schedule a meeting with the DoFD to review the ethnographic notes and reflect on the observations. The purpose of the observation and follow-up meeting is:
- To notice and affirm the faculty member’s effective pedagogical practice
- To support the faculty member’s growth in their pedagogical awareness and knowledge
- To provide a written document of the ethnographic notes that meets the need of the faculty member (evaluation, promotion, reflection, etc.)
Faculty in management positions, (i.e. department chair, division head, center director) can request training to become ethnographic observers who provide support and feedback to their colleagues.
