About Marshall Brooks Library at Principia College

Interlibrary Loan Policy

Borrowing Guidelines

Interlibrary loan (ILL) provides access to research materials owned by other libraries. This service is provided to current Principia College students, faculty and staff (including retired faculty and staff living in the area). A valid library account is required.

Submitting a Request

After finding relevant materials in  WorldCat, click on the ILL button above the citation and fill out the request form.

OR

Complete an online interlibrary loan request form.

Please allow at least 7-14 days for your request to be filled.

Patrons are allowed 6 academic requests per week; 5 non-academic requests per term.

Loan Periods

Photocopied and PDF articles are mailed to the user and may be kept.

Circulation time for books and other items is dependent upon the policy of the lending library and can range from 1-4 weeks. Some items may be loaned with additional restrictions, such as for use in the library only.

Renewal requests must be submitted three days before the item is due. Approval for renewal is at the discretion of the lending library. Only one renewal is allowed per item.

What Can Be Requested

Most library materials are available for loan from other libraries. Some exceptions are recently published books, reference materials, rare and special collections, videos, CDs, DVDs and entire volumes or issues of periodicals. Textbooks are not requested through Interlibrary Loan. ILL requests for titles owned by our library but that are currently checked out are not processed. Those requests are added to the request queue for that title.

Costs

The cost involved in borrowing interlibrary loan materials is not passed on to our patrons. Overdue fines are charged at the rate of $1.00 per day beginning the day after the material is due and continuing until the item is returned. The loaning institution sets the replacement costs and any other processing fees for lost materials. These charges are non-negotiable. Fines and/or replacement costs unpaid are charged our policies.

Notification

Photocopied and PDF articles are mailed to the user and may be kept.

Borrowers will be notified by phone or e-mail when materials arrive. Items should be picked up promptly at the circulation desk.

Copyright compliance for borrowed items is the responsibility of the patron.

Lending Guidelines

Marshall Brooks Library accepts requests received from other libraries via WorldCat Resource Sharing and ALA or ILLINET (libraries in Illinois) forms via fax or mail. Items generally not circulated include reference or reserve books, audio-visual materials, current or bound periodicals, items in our rare book collection, or materials in fragile condition.

The initial loan period is 28 days and with one renewal providing another patron has not placed a hold on the items.

Marshall Brooks Library does not charge for interlibrary loan service within the United States. The minimum replacement cost is $100.00.

Marshall Brooks Library complies with the U.S. copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code) and its accompanying guidelines.

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Marshall Brooks Library is an LVIS (Libraries Very Interested in Sharing) member and abides by the American Library Association Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States, the ILLINET Interlibrary Loan Code, and the Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS).
