Voter Registration in Wyoming

Eligibility

  • Age: 18 years of age on Election Day
  • Formerly incarcerated individuals: Not been convicted of a felony, or if convicted, had civil or voting rights restored
  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Residence: Resident of Wyoming and the precinct in which registered
  • Not adjudicated mentally incompetent.

Deadline

  • Voter registration deadlines are determined by the date of the election.
  • Voter Registration Closes (by mail): Pre-Primary, August 3, 2020
  • Voter Registration Closes (by mail): Pre-General Election, October 19, 2020
  • Primary & Election Day (General): Voters may register and vote at their polling places

In person, election day registration is available at local county clerk's offices.       

Updating registration      

To update registration after a move, name change, or change of political party affiliation, use the Wyoming Voter Registration Form. A voter needs to re-register to vote if they did not vote in the previous general election.

Online Registration

Wyoming does not offer online voter registration.

Mail-in Registration

  • Complete the registration form and sign the oath before an oath-taking officer
  • Include a (scanned) paper copy of the identification shown to the oath-taking officer
  • Mail the form and printed copy of your identification directly to your local County Clerk’s office

Accepted forms of identification include:

  • U.S. Passport
  • Out-of-State Driver's License
  • Military ID
  • ID Card issued by local, state, or federal agency
  • WY Student ID

OR TWO of the following:

  • Certificate of US citizenship or naturalization
  • Draft record
  • Voter Registration Card from out-of-state
  • Original or certified copy of birth certificate
  • Any other form of ID issued by official agency

In Person Registration

  • Present a valid Wyoming driver's license. (If you do not have your current valid driver's license with you, you must provide the number along with additional acceptable identification as noted above)
  • If you have not been issued a Wyoming driver's license or yours is expired, you must provide:
    • A statement to that effect
    • The last four digits of your social security number; and
    • Acceptable identification as noted above.
  • If you have neither a valid Wyoming driver's license nor a social security number, please indicate this by checking the appropriate box on the Voter Registration Application form and contact your County Clerk.

ID Requirements for Voting

If you are already registered to vote in Wyoming, you will not need to present any form of identification at the polling place. See the "Registration" tab for ID requirements for registering to vote.

Absentee voting

Who is eligible to use an absentee ballot?

  • Any voter may apply for an absentee ballot at any time during a calendar year in which the election is held, but not on the day of the election.
  • Voters can vote an absentee ballot in person in the office of the county clerk or by mail 40 days before an election.
  • To request an absentee ballot, contact your Wyoming County Clerk.
  • Absentee ballots must be received by the county clerk no later than 7:00 p.m. on Election Day. Absentee ballots can be returned in person or by mail.

If you are a Military or Overseas Citizen, special absentee voting provisions apply.

Polling places and hours

  • Use the Polling Place Locator to find your polling place. 
  • For a general election or primary, polls in Wyoming are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Time off to vote: Wyoming law entitles voters to one hour, other than the meal hour, to vote. However, the law does not apply to certain categories of employees, such as some federal workers or those who have three or more consecutive nonworking hours during the time polls are open.

Elections

Primaries vs. general elections

  • Primary elections are conducted to select each party’s candidates in the general election.
  • In Wyoming, a voter must be a member of a political party in order to vote in that party’s primary.
  • In a general election, voters are not required to have a party affiliation.
  • In Wyoming, voters may change party affiliation by completing an application signed before a notarial officer or election official, and filing it with the county clerk not less than fourteen (14) days before the primary election or at the polls on the day of the primary or general election, or when requesting an absentee ballot.

Who conducts elections?

  • The Wyoming Secretary of State is the chief election officer for the state and maintains uniformity in the applications and operations of the election laws of Wyoming. Each county clerk is the chief election officer for the county.
  • The County Clerk is the chief elections officer for each county.
  • City Clerks are the chief elections officer for each city. Municipal elections are conducted through the county clerks office. 

Where to go with complaints about candidates or how elections are conducted

The Wyoming Secretary of State is authorized to adopt rules and regulations necessary to comply with the requirements of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002, Public Law 107-252, including a state-based administrative complaint procedure, which shall not be subject to the Wyoming Administrative Procedure Act.  Wyoming § 22-2-121(d).

Wyoming's Campaign Finance Information System (WYCFIS) exists to provide a mechanism for online filing of campaign finance information and to provide full disclosure to the public. The WYCFIS website contains detailed financial records and related information that candidates, committees, organizations and parties are required by law to disclose.
