Voter Registration in Nebraska

Eligibility

  • Age: at least 18 years old or turning 18 by the first Tuesday following the first Monday of November of this year.

  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.

  • Residence: Must be a resident of Nebraska and of the county where you are registering. If you move to another county, you must re-register.

  • Felony Conviction: If you have been convicted of a felony, either in Nebraska or another state or in federal court, you cannot register to vote until two years after  the completion of your sentence including any probation or parole term.

  • Persons found mentally incompetent (Non composer mantis) by a court cannot register to vote. 

Deadline

Voter registration deadlines are determined by the date of election.

  • Nebraska does not allow same day registration.

  • April 22, 2022 is the registration deadline for the 2022 primary election.

  • October 21, 2022 Is the registration deadline for the 2022 general election.

In Person Registration Deadlines

Deadlines for registration at the County Clerk/Election Commissioner's Office are prior to 6 p.m. and determined by the election date.

  • April 29, 2022 is the deadline to register in person for the 2022 primary election.
  • October 28, 2022 is the deadline to register in person for the 2022 general election.

Mail-in Registration

An online voter registration application can be printed and mailed to your county's election office. Addresses of your county election office are listed on the form. 

Updating registration

You must re-regester if the following changes occur: 

  • Your name 

  • Your address

  • Your political party affiliation

  • Failure to vote in a previous election does not require re-registration

Voter Registration Cancellation Forms

The County Clerk/Election Commission in each County maintains the voter rolls. To remove someone from a voter roll, contact the local County Clerk/Election Commissioner.

Requirements for Nebraska Voters Identity Verification

Registering to Vote

There is no waiting period to register to vote in Nebraska. You can register to vote the same day you become a Nebraska resident. 

 

Online Registration

Complete an online voter registration at NEReg2Vote (English) or NERegVote (Spanish).

Online registration can also be completed through the State Department of Motor Vehicles when renewing or ordering a duplicate diver's license.

Mail-in Registration

An online voter registration application can be printed for your use. Applications must be mailed to your county's election office. Addresses of your county election office are listed on the form. 

  • First time mail-in registers must : 
  1. provide a copy of a current and valid photo ID, OR
  2. Copy of a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, OR
  3. Other government document which is dated within 60 days immediately prior to the date of presentation showing the same name and residence address provided on the voter registration application to avoid delays with your registration

Voting

 

Where to vote

Each voter must cast their ballot at their assigned polling place. You can find the location of you polling place by contacting you county clerk/election commissioner, or check Voterview.

Whenever you register or re-register to vote your county clerk/ election commissioner will inform you of your polling place location. Your voting card informs inform you of your polling place and voting districts. 

Polls 

Polls are open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Central Time Zone and from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. in the Mountain Time Zone. 

Do I need a voting card or ID in order to vote?

No, voting cards or IDs do not to be presented to election officials in order to vote. 

Unless mailed in registration that did not provide ID or address verification must present the following:

  • ID
  • Copy of a utility bill, bank statement
  • government check, paycheck, OR
  • Other government document that is current and shows your name and residence address

Failure to re-register 

  • Registered voters who moved from one residence to another in the same county, or who changed their name and remained in the same county will be allowed to vote at the polling place designated for their new residence.
  • These voters may be asked to cast a Provisional Ballot upon completing a certification and new registration form. 
  • Persons casting Provisional Ballots may check to see if their ballot was counted starting the second Wednesday after the election by visiting Votercheck or calling toll free 1-888-727-0007. Provisional Ballots are counted only if the information the voter provided on their certification forms was verified.
  • Persons moving from one county in Nebraska to another county in Nebraska must re-register in their new county in order to be eligible to vote. 

Voting

At you assigned polling place you will be asked by three or more poll workers to check in with: 

  • Name 
  • Adress
  • Party will be asked during primary elections

After verification you will given a ballot. Ballots are filled in by filling in the oval completely. 

 

Receiving Voter Assistance

Assistance from  a friend, relative or requested election board workers can assist voters if they:

  • Cannot Read 
  • Are Blind, OR
  • Have a physical disability 

Additionally ballot marking devices are available at every polling place which allows the voter to:

  • Have all contests and candidates read to them 
  • enlarge print marking

Campaign at Polling place

No campaigning is allowed within 200 feet from a polling place

Who is eligible to use an absentee ballot?

Nebraska is a "non-excuse" state- Any voter may request an early voted (absentee) ballet. There is no need to provide a reason.

  • Use the Polling Place Locator to find your polling place.
  • For a general election or primary, polls in Connecticut are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time and 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Mountain Time.
  • Check with your county clerk/election commissioner's office regarding voting hours.
  • Time off to vote: Nebraska does not require employers to give employees time off to vote.

Primaries vs. general elections

  • Primary elections are conducted to select each party’s candidates in the general election.
  • In Connecticut, a voter must be a member of a political party in order to vote in that party’s primary.
  • In a general election, voters are not required to have a party affiliation.
